Have you tried any of the following techniques with your background stamps?

  • Use a watermark ink, like VersaMark, to create a subtle tone-one-tone pattern. You can add a clear embossing powder to impart texture and shine to your monochromatic look.
  • Take your embossed background stamp pattern a step further by adding color. Add a single color of ink over your pattern or blend a variety of colors gently layering them to achieve a more dynamic look that boasts incredible depth. Alternatively, use watercolors for a more variegated look or markers or pencils for more precise control of your color application. If you’re adding color to an embossed pattern, gently wipe the embossed areas with a soft cloth to remove any stray color.
  • Add interest to large-scale die cuts by adding a pop of pattern. Stamp the full background stamp design to create a panel you’ll be able to cut multiple elements from. Set some aside for future use — you’ll love having options set aside for quick crafting opportunities! Bold words and scenery elements like grass and trees are all great options for this technique.
  • Layer patterns for custom looks. Use the same background stamp, slightly shifted or rotated (layered striped patterns make for quick and easy plaids!) or layer different patterns stamped in contrasting colors for bold looks. Try combining a more classic pattern like dots or stripes with a standout floral to result in a truly unforgettable result.
  • Use a masking technique to apply pattern to just a small portion of a die cut. This is a particularly effective technique for character images. Consider the scale of your pattern before choosing your background stamp to ensure the pattern doesn’t overwhelm the image. Use a masking product – like Stamping Mask Paper, Mask It Medium Tack Sheets, or Post-It Tape (for smaller areas) to protect the areas of the image you don’t want the background stamp to affect. Choose a waterproof ink, like one of our Hybrid Ink options, stamp the pattern, remove the mask, and add color using the medium of your choice!
